Late night grocery shopping

March 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Derek rented a movie from RedBox last night, we had to return it by 9:00 tonight to avoid being charged more.  Since we were already going to the grocery store, we decided to go grocery shopping.  What a mistake!  At 9:00 pm Saturday, there were like 10000 people shopping.  I can’t believe that so many people believe in Jesus and need to make food for the celebration of his resurrection.  We saw some friends at the store also grocery shopping who do not have Easter plans, so I was glad to know that we’re not the only losers who shop on Saturday night to beat the crowds.  It must be a graduate student thing.

My guess is that ACME didn’t not anticipate the Easter rush; there were only two checkout lines plus the self checkout lines out.  Yep, we self checked out $120 worth of groceries.  Took about 15 minutes, but I am still convinced it was less time than waiting in line.  Since we spent over $50, we had to present ID and the lady that came over said to me “I don’t really need to see this, you’re in here all the time.”  Am I?  really?  Oh geez.  Look lady, for all you know, I could be a perpetual criminal.

Party day in Pittsburgh, PA

December 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I got into Pittsburgh last night at 12:45 am.  From there, I drove my dad’s car (which was conveniently parked at the airport, they’re in Mexico) to his house…arrived about 2 am.

This morning I got up and headed to Melanie’s baby shower to help set up.  There surprisingly wasn’t that much to do, so Mel and I sat around and ate chips and played with Laura’s baby.  Melanie looked so cute for her shower!!!  People showed up at 1 pm.  It was a pretty shower with good Polish food.  I gorged myself on stuffed cabbage and this cabbage pasta salad that I always forget the name for.  I got to catch up with some of my old friends from when I used to live here.  It’s funny how the people that you knew when you were young, you kind of never lose that bond.  Melanie got lots of awesome stuff for her baby, she’s totally set.  I didn’t finish her quilt in time due to lack of time and sewing machine malfunction.  It was sweet because I got awesome stuff too…I actually won one of the prizes…a basket full of Christmas stuff, like wrapping paper, boxes, tape, bags.  Now I don’t have to buy any.  We went back to Melanie’s house and went through all of her gifts and organized them.  I was amused because everything with Winnie the Pooh on it, Melanie said, “this is white trash”, “pooh is white trash”…haha she kills me.

From the shower I went to an advent party that was hosted by a family lived down the street from me when I was little.  If you don’t know what an advent party is, it’s a German tradition of having get togethers in the 4 weeks before Christmas.  They’re pretty fun.  It starts off with singing Christmas carols (and drinking of course).  Then you go around the table and everyone gets to say three things that they want from Santa and you get a “grade” from your parents or your husband/wife for how good you have been this year and these are recorded in the “official advent record book”.  It sounds kind of lame, but it’s really cool to look back at the entries from when we were little…we got some really bad grades and wanted some really stupid stuff.  The rest of the night was filled with Christmas BINGO, drinking, eating, mental pictures of an 80 year old woman and a 50 year old man having sex and being merry.

The short version.  I got up at 10 am, I sat at a table with people I haven’t seen in a long time, I ate (way too much) free food, came home at 2 am and went to bed.
